Irish Crochet

I’ve been interested in crochet for a while now.

When I was a young child I learned to crochet from my grandmother, when I was an older child, maybe around 12ish I was making crocheted rag rugs from leftover fabric I would rip into strips. The fabric came from my mom’s sewing room. She was a dressmaker.

In my teenage years I was more interested in sewing clothing and reading so I got away from crochet. Really, I knew two stitches. Single crochet and double crochet and that was it.

I have a baby blanket a relative made for me when I was born. It is filet crochet with a picture of a different nursery rhyme character in each of 4 squares. i think I would like to learn how to do that someday.

This past April I went to the DFW Fiber Fest and while I was there I met Shannon Mullet-Bowlsby who is a knitting and crochet designer. Also, I fell in love with him immediately. Anyway, he showed me some of his crochet designs and they weren’t the heavy, old fashioned looking garments that I expected.

On and on I have been going. Spinning in circles and wanting to start again. But there is always so much to do and so little time to re-learn a thing.

Then, my Googling brought me to the Irish Crochet Lab website. This type of crochet has always fascinated me. The three dimensionality of it, the laciness of it. So beautiful and so interesting. Here’s a beautiful blog to check out. Basically, you make all of the motifs separately and then join them together with a crocheted netting.

So I paid my money on the Irish Crochet Lab website on November 30th  and I will be slowly working through the beginning lessons.

I think the best way to do this right now is just to put aside an hour or two every few days to devote to it. Because, let’s face it, the spinning needs to get done and that loom is calling my name.
